The durag, a useful item that became a symbol

Before being a fashion accessory, the men's durag is a tool: it keeps hairstyles in place, protects the work done on the hair, and helps set waves. It is this practical function that gave it its place in African-American culture, and then in the global hip-hop wardrobe, where it has become a full-fledged style marker.

Why velvet changes everything

Not all materials are created equal. Velvet is softer and less abrasive than polyester alone: it glides over the hair fiber instead of snagging it, which limits breakage and frizz. This is the reason why much research into the hair durag focuses precisely on this material. This white model is listed as 100% velvet and polyester, with handmade construction.

How to put it on properly

  • Center the back seam at the nape of the neck and lay the fabric flat on the top of the head, without any folds.
  • Cross the ties behind the head, bring them to the forehead, and tie them there, not on the side.
  • Tighten firmly but without compression: a painful mark on the forehead means it is too tight.
  • Pull the cape down at the back: it protects the neck and gives the durag its characteristic silhouette.

Which color to choose?

The question often comes up, especially regarding the black durag, the most versatile shade. In practice, the rule is simple: a dark color disappears into the outfit and lets the rest express itself, while a light color becomes the focal point of the look. This white model clearly falls into one of these two logics—it's up to you to choose the one that fits your wardrobe.

A unisex accessory

The durag is not reserved for men: the women's durag search query is currently growing faster than its male equivalent, driven by care routines for curly and coily hair. This model can be worn by anyone.

Care

Hand washing in lukewarm water with mild soap is sufficient. Avoid machine wringing, which deforms the ties, and the tumble dryer, which crushes the velvet. Dry flat, away from direct heat sources. When well cared for, a velvet durag retains its softness for a very long time.

Frequently asked questions

Can a durag damage hair?

If tied incorrectly, a durag that is too tight can pull on the roots. Tied correctly and made from a soft material like velvet, it actually protects the hairstyle.

Can you sleep with it?

This is one of its most common uses: it maintains the hairstyle throughout the night and avoids friction against the pillow.

Is it suitable for all hair types?

Yes. It is mostly used on coily and curly hair to set waves, but there is nothing to stop you from wearing it as a simple style accessory.

Ring Size Guide

To know your ring size, you need to measure the circumference of your finger or the diameter of a ring you usually wear.

Measure the circumference of your finger

Take a tape measure or a piece of paper, wrap it around your finger, mark the limits and transfer the measurement to a graduated ruler to know the circumference.

In this table you will find the correspondence between ring size and finger circumference (in cm):

Measuring the diameter of a ring

You can also measure the diameter of one of your rings with a ruler. Place the ruler on your ring and measure the space between its inner edges and the center of the ring. This method is the most accurate.

SIZE GUIDE: WATCHES

Watch sizing is generally adjustable. Here are the steps to follow to adjust your watch strap to fit your wrist.

1 - Step One - Measure the Watch Strap : To know how many links to remove, wear your watch strap on your wrist as you would like to wear it, then hold the loose portion of the excess strap to pretend they are being removed. The dangling links will tell you how many links you will need to remove first.

  • Take note! Try to remove the same number of links from each side of the watch to ensure the clasp remains in the center of the bracelet.

2 - Gather your tools. You will need tools to remove the links from your watch:

  • A thin, pointed rod or drift.
  • Long-nose pliers.
  • A small hammer.

3 - Prepare your work environment. Work in a clutter-free workspace to avoid possible loss of workpieces.

4 - Choose the stitch you need to remove. Use your pin punch to push the pin that holds the stitch you are going to remove.

  • Push the pin in a few millimeters and remove it from the bracket on the reverse side using your pliers or your hands.
  • Place the pin in your tool holder, you will need it later to put the band back in place.

5 - Reassemble the watch strap. After removing all the links you wanted, you'll put the pins back into the strap to finish the job. Here's how:

  • Place the pins back in the middle of the stitches you want to connect and make sure you insert them into the holes at the same time.
  • You can also lightly tap the pins using a small hammer.

6 - Try on your watch. Your watch should now be the right size for your wrist if you have removed the correct number of links. If you still find it too big, remove more links.

  • Keep any excess stitches, pins, and metal rings, as you may need them later.
