Harlem rapper A$ap Ferg recently sat down with GQ Magazine to showcase his collection of hip hop jewelry. Ferg showed off many of his pieces, including chains, grillz, and watches. A$ap uses a Louis Vuitton jewelry case for traveling around the world. Ferg starts by showing us his rainbow tennis bracelet. He tells us: "When I was a kid, I saw popes wearing different jewelry and I always wanted some."

A$AP Ferg's style: color on the wrist

The rainbow tennis bracelet mentioned in the video is not a minor detail. It’s a statement of method: for him, color comes before the display of volume.

This is a clear departure from collections centered on thick links. A diamond tennis bracelet is thin, flexible, almost discreet from a distance, yet impossible to ignore up close.

The second marker is how the pieces are distributed on the body. Neck, wrist, teeth: the pieces are spread out rather than concentrated, which gives a look that is less bulky and more polished.

The third is the logic of a portable collection. A piece must be storable, travel-friendly, and protected. A jewelry collection that travels a lot requires robust formats and reliable clasps.

Anatomy of the tennis bracelet: what makes a good model

A tennis bracelet is not a set chain. It is a succession of small settings, called chatons, each holding a stone and linked together by joints. This construction explains both its flexibility and its weak points.

The chaton is the part that holds the stone. Its depth determines security: a setting that is too flat leaves the stone flush and exposed to all impacts against tables, car doors, and keyboards.

The joint between two chatons is the primary point of wear. It bends with every wrist movement, thousands of times a day. On a well-constructed model, the pins are solid, not just pinched.

The width, expressed in millimeters, corresponds to the diameter of the stones. From 3 to 4 mm, the bracelet remains discreet and can be worn under a sleeve. At 5 mm and above, it becomes a statement piece.

The clasp, finally, must absolutely include a secondary safety mechanism. A tennis bracelet is lost through the clasp, never the middle, and it is often lost without the wearer even noticing.

Element What to check Sign of a solid model
Chaton Depth of the setting Stone recessed, not flush
Joint Lateral play Flexibility without wobbling
Width Stone diameter Perfect regularity from end to end
Clasp Presence of a safety Safety latch or figure-eight

A quick test in-store or upon receipt: lay the bracelet flat and make it ripple. It should curve smoothly. A point that remains rigid signals a stiff or poorly assembled joint.

How to achieve this look on the wrist

The first decision is length. A tennis bracelet should be worn snug, with about one centimeter of play compared to your wrist size. If it's too long, it will slide onto your hand and bang against everything in its path.

The second is width, which depends on the size of your wrist. For a wrist circumference under 17 cm, stay under 4 mm: beyond that, the bracelet visually takes up the entire width of the arm.

The third is pairing. A tennis bracelet goes very well with a watch worn on the same wrist, provided you place it on the hand side and not the elbow side to avoid rubbing against the watch case.

Finally, if you are also wearing a wide bracelet, separate the two wrists. Two pieces of such different natures side-by-side create visual clutter.

Making a tennis bracelet last

This piece of jewelry is subjected to the most stress of the entire collection because it is mobile, exposed, and delicate. A few habits can radically change its longevity.

Remove it for sports and sleeping. Lateral torsion is what kills the joints, and that is exactly what happens when the wrist is crushed under a pillow or gripped against a bar.

Check the clasp every week. Close it, then pull gently. If it gives way, have the mechanism replaced before wearing it again.

Clean from the underside. Dirt accumulates under the chatons, exactly where the light needs to enter. A soft toothbrush and lukewarm soapy water are sufficient; complete drying is mandatory.

Store it flat, never rolled up. Rolling it forces the joints in a single direction and creates points of fatigue.

An annual checkup with a professional allows for tightening the prongs before a stone falls out. It is always cheaper than replacing a lost stone.

Also, beware of household products. Chlorinated cleaners and perfumes attack the finish and tarnish the metal between the chatons, where a cloth never reaches. Put the bracelet on last, after you are dressed and perfumed, and take it off first at night.

Finally, if you own several bracelets, rotate them. A piece of jewelry worn every other day undergoes half as many bending cycles, and this simple rotation significantly extends the life of the joints.

Frequently asked questions

What tennis bracelet width should I choose?

3 to 4 mm for daily wear, 5 mm and up for a statement piece. Below 17 cm of wrist circumference, stay under 4 mm.

Should a tennis bracelet be worn tight?

Snug, with about one centimeter of play. Too loose, and it slides on your hand and hits everything.

Why do stones fall out of a tennis bracelet?

Almost always because of settings that are too flat or prongs loosened by impacts. An annual checkup prevents loss.

Can you wear a tennis bracelet with a watch?

Yes, by placing it on the hand side so it doesn't rub against the case. Otherwise, separate them on opposite wrists.
