The style of SAINt JHN: chosen pieces, not accumulated

This collection stands out for its restraint. Few pieces, but each is identifiable, with a high proportion of items that have narrative value rather than being purely for show.

Silver occupies an unusual place here in a world dominated by gold. It is a choice that cools the palette and gives a more graphic look, particularly on small items and figurative motifs.

The second marker is the placement of rings. Where many collections focus everything on the neck, the hand becomes a canvas in its own right here, which completely changes the balance of the silhouette.

The third is the symbolic object. A dice motif or a piece with a cultural reference tells a personal story, and that is what distinguishes a collection from a simple inventory of hip hop jewelry.

Rings and signet rings: anatomy, sizing, and how to wear them

A ring is the most technical piece of jewelry to choose because it is the only one that must adjust precisely to a part of the body. A half-size error makes a piece unwearable.

The table is the visible top surface. On a signet ring, it is large and flat, making it an ideal surface for an initial, an engraved motif, or a pavé setting. Its size should be chosen according to the width of the finger: a table that protrudes beyond the edges always looks disproportionate.

The shoulders connect the table to the body of the ring. Their thickness determines the overall strength: this is the area where a ring deforms if it is too thin.

The shank (or band) determines comfort. A so-called "comfort fit" profile, rounded on the inside, is much more comfortable for daily wear than a flat profile, especially beyond 6 mm in width.

For sizing, keep a simple rule in mind: the wider the ring, the more you need to go up by half a size. A 10 mm ring fits much tighter than a 3 mm ring at the same diameter.

Type Characteristic Which finger
Signet ring Large table, engravable Pinky or ring finger
Band ring Regular flat band Index or middle finger
Statement ring Pronounced relief volume Middle finger, the widest finger
Thin ring Less than 4 mm Pinky, or stacked

Always measure at the end of the day and at normal temperature. Fingers swell with heat and activity, and a size taken in the morning almost always results in a ring that is too tight in the evening.

How to achieve this look on the hand

The first decision is quantity. Two rings on the same hand are almost always enough; any more and the overall look loses clarity and becomes a nuisance for daily tasks.

The second is distribution. A bold piece on the pinky and a thin piece on the index finger works better than two pieces of identical volume on adjacent fingers.

The third is metal consistency with the rest of your outfit. A silver ring against a yellow gold chain creates a sharp break: either you embrace it as a contrast, or you introduce a two-tone piece.

Finally, consider your activity. A ring with a relief motif will snag on pockets, gloves, and keyboards. If you work with your hands, a band ring or a comfort profile will be much more practical.

Maintaining 925 silver and daily-wear rings

925 silver poses a problem that gold does not: it oxidizes upon contact with air and sulfur, and gradually darkens. This is not a quality defect, it is a property of the metal.

The remedy is simple. A silver polishing cloth removes surface oxidation in a few swipes. For more pronounced tarnishing, a bath in lukewarm soapy water followed by gentle polishing is sufficient in most cases.

Conversely, wear silver regularly. Friction against the skin and clothing slows down oxidation, whereas a piece left in a drawer for months will tarnish much faster.

Remove rings before manual labor and exercise. Lateral impacts ovalize a ring, and an ovalized ring never perfectly returns to its shape.

Finally, store each ring separately. Two rings rubbing together in a box will scratch each other, and scratches on a flat table are the most visible of all.

A note on set rings. Stones placed on the shoulders are much more exposed than those on the table because they rub against neighboring fingers with every movement of the hand. These are the ones that should be checked as a priority, about every six months.

If a ring needs to be resized, be aware that the operation is not always possible. A ring set all the way around cannot be cut or enlarged without removing stones. This is one more reason to measure carefully before ordering.

On a smooth ring, however, resizing is a common procedure. It consists of removing or adding a segment of metal, then soldering and repolishing. A good workshop makes the alteration invisible.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know my ring size?

Measure your finger size at the end of the day, at normal temperature. Add half a size if the ring is wider than 6 mm.

Which finger should I wear a signet ring on?

Traditionally on the pinky or ring finger. The choice depends mainly on the width of the table relative to the finger.

Why does 925 silver tarnish?

It is a natural oxidation process upon contact with air and sulfur. A silver polishing cloth removes it easily.

How many rings should I wear on one hand?

A maximum of two in most cases. Vary the volumes rather than multiplying pieces of identical size.
