Gold plating can slowly tarnish due to humidity and sweat. The best thing you can do for a chain is to avoid water and sweat. Don't wear your gold-plated jewelry outdoors on a very hot day or you'll sweat a lot on the chain. The acidity of sweat will accelerate the discoloration of your chain. Second, don't wear gold-plated items every day. Try to wear them only on special occasions and outings.

Basic Quality - 14k gold plated chains. The item description will indicate the karat and the item is usually under €50.
High Quality - Stainless steel or sterling silver chains, with thick gold plating. Most of these chains are 18k gold plated with Italian dipped manufacturing. These chains cost more, but the gold plating will last longer.
