Lil Yachty recently dropped his album Lil Boat 2, which features 17 tracks and appearances by 2 Chainz, Quavo, PnB Rock, Tee Grizzley, NBA YoungBoy, Lil Pump, Trippie Redd, and Offset. Yachty sat down with GQ for the On The Rocks series, where he tells us how much each of them is worth. "I think at one point in my career, I was addicted to buying bling bling jewelry," says Yachty. He unpacked his jewelry box and showed off his Simpsons chain, his self-portrait chain, and many other of his iced-out diamonds.
The clearest trait is the character-driven taste. A cartoon-inspired chain or a piece featuring his own likeness: the jewelry here becomes a pop object, almost a luxury toy, far removed from the classic vocabulary of jewelry. The shape comes first, and it must be immediately recognizable.
Second trait: the logic of collecting, acknowledged as such in the interview. You don't choose a piece for eternity; you accumulate objects that tell stories of periods, moods, and characters. This implies varied, often colorful pieces, and an uninhibited relationship with jewelry.
Third trait: "all-iced." This style relies on fully paved surfaces, where every millimeter reflects light. It is very effective on camera, but it also requires well-designed bases, because dense paving requires metal capable of holding the stones over time.
A pop wardrobe relies on a counter-intuitive rule: the more whimsical the piece, the calmer the rest of the outfit should be. A character chain speaks for itself; it requires a simple outfit and few other visible pieces of jewelry.
The second key is length. A large, figurative piece must fall in an open area, on the sternum, where it remains fully visible. Too high, it folds into the collar; too low, it swings and is difficult to read in motion.
These are two very different concepts, often confused. 925 silver, or sterling silver, is a solid metal: 92.5% pure silver alloyed with other metals to give it hardness. The material is the same from the surface to the core of the piece.
Gold-plated, on the other hand, is not a metal but a surface treatment: a layer of gold deposited on a base metal. What matters then is not the color but the thickness of the layer and the quality of the base, as these determine the lifespan of the finish.

Concretely, a silver piece that turns black is not damaged: it is surface oxidation, reversible with an appropriate cloth. A plated piece that reveals the base metal, however, has lost its surface layer at that spot; only a new deposit restores the original appearance.
Hence two different reflexes. For silver, clean regularly and store away from humid air. For plating, limit abrasion: no hard brushes, no polishing paste, no repeated rubbing in the same spot—and above all, avoid prolonged contact with sweat and perfumes.
Finally, for iced pieces, the logic is the same but with an extra point of attention: the stone settings concentrate the wear. Gentle cleaning without harsh products protects both the finish and the setting integrity.
Solid bases and clean finishes: the essential foundation for wearing "all-iced" jewelry without nasty surprises after a few months.
The right choice doesn't depend on a value hierarchy but on how often you wear it. A piece worn every day, in constant contact with the skin, places significant stress on the surface: solid metal is more forgiving because it cannot lose a layer.
Conversely, for a spectacular piece worn for going out, photos, or on stage, plating has a real advantage: it provides the desired tone and shine on volumes that would make solid metal very heavy to wear, especially with large links.
A third criterion comes into play: your skin. Some people have more acidic sweat, which accelerates the oxidation of silver and the wear of plating. In this case, wiping it down systematically after every wear becomes the only habit that really matters, regardless of the material.
Finally, the size of the piece matters. On a ring, the inner surface is constantly rubbing against the finger: that's the area that marks first. On a chain, it's the edges of the links and the clasp. Knowing where to look allows you to anticipate maintenance rather than just reacting to it.
